1879 cover from Customs Tamsuy (27 Nov), transit Customs Amoy (29 Nov) to Customs Shanghai (2Dec), with Large Dragon 3 candareen stamp (thin paper with right sheet margin) added on arrival, paying for domestic postage. The addressee William Hancock (1846-1914) was born at Lurgan, Ireland, and educated at a private school in Lancaster. Hancock joined the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service in 1874, and was appointed clerk at Chefoo on arriving in China in July at an early age of 27. He was transferred to the Inspectorate-General at Peking in 1875 to study Chinese. He was given various postings around the country and in 1881-1882 he became the Assistant in Charge at the Tamsui Customs in Taiwan. Other postings include Amoy with the same title. During 1885-1888, he was a professor at Customs College, Peking, where he probably taught Chinese. By 1905 he was acting Commissioner in Yochow until his resignation in 1908. 1879.11.27 台灣淡水寄出,鈐淡水海關紅色日戳(日期“27”倒置),11.29 經廈門鈐廈門海關紅色日戳, 12.2 到達上海,加貼大龍薄紙3分銀郵票帶右邊紙一枚,支付國內郵資,銷上海海關黑色日戳,並加鈐黑色到達日戳。 收件人韓威禮(William Hancock),生於愛爾蘭,於1874年到達中國,加入海關,首站為煙臺,後學習中國語文,曾服務於中國海關的不同城市,1881-1882年赴臺灣省任職,1908年回到英國,1914年逝世。從台灣寄出,貼用大龍郵票的,僅此一件,獨一無二。源流:高七來 斯托勒夫 蔡盛 著錄:黃建斌《大龍信封存世攷》p.112-113
