INDIA, Used in Straits Settlements—Singapore, 1854, 4a Red & Blue, 4th Printing, Head Die III, Frame Die II (6F; SG 23). Partially cut to shape, used with slightly overlapping 1854, 1a Red, Die II (4B; SG 14), horizontal pair, large to full margins, all tied by three exceptional strikes of "B/172" cancel on cover to Canton, China, sender's directive "p St Norma", lightly struck red Singapore May 17, 1856 despatch datestamp on back, red framed "INDIA PAID" and blue company handstamps, Hong Kong (May 23) transit, red manuscript "8d" rate marking, small triangular cut out at top not affecting markings or stamps
VERY FINE AND EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THE "B/172" CANCEL OF SINGAPORE IN PRIVATE HANDS. THE 4-ANNAS AND PAIR OF ONE-ANNA LITHOGRAPH STAMPS ON THIS COVER FROM SINGAPORE TO CANTON PAID THE SHORT-LIVED 6-ANNAS RATE (TO HONG KONG). AN IMPORTANT AND VITAL POSTAL HISTORY ARTIFACT FOR ANY AWARD-WINNING COLLECTION.
