1909, 1¢ dark green & black, overprint reading down, type I,
inverted center (Scott 31a), deep rich color, perforations at
left scissors cut well outside the edges of the holes leaving these
intact, canceled by Las Cascades duplex, Very Fine and a
superlative example of one of the pre-eminent rarities of Canal
Zone philately, possibly the finest extant, ex Gilbert N. Plass,
Drucker Family, "Laila", and George Campbell collections, with 1967
and 2003 P.F. certificates.
Scott $22,500.
One of the most famous rarities of the Canal Zone, of which only
four used examples have been recorded. A common characteristic of
each example is the blunt or clipped perforations from scissors
separation on one side, suggesting that these may have originated
from sheets of stamps to make booklets. The first example of this
great rarity was not discovered until 1932, by George Wirth, who
removed it from a postcard used in 1913, suggesting that this error
was included in the delivery of August 22, 1911. It once resided in
the Edward Conger and Robert Cunliffe collections. The second
example (offered in this sale) was found in the 1950s. The third
example, which came to light in 1969, is defective.
