1936 ‘SCIPIO’ CRETE. ‘On 22 August 1936, the Imperial Airways
flying boat “Scipio” crashed due to pilot error at Mirabella Bay,
Crete, en route from Alexandria to London with stops at Mirabella
Bay and Brindisi. The mail was transported to Athens and forwarded
from there. Many different cachets were used to indicate the reason
for the damaged mail and the delay. This registered cover from
India to London has had one of the stamps washed off. A two
line’DAMAGED BY S A ATER’ cachet is on the back, with missing
letters
